WHY JAVIER

What Javier brings to the room.

Javier Goyeneche shows how circularity moves from environmental ambition into products, supply chains and commercial decisions. His experience building ECOALF gives leaders a grounded view of the trade-offs involved in making materials, design and partnerships serve a credible long-term business model.

KEYNOTE TOPICS

Ideas built for the stage.

01

From Waste to Design: Building a Circular Product

Goyeneche traces the decisions required to transform recovered resources into products people want to use. The session explores research, material quality, design and commercial discipline, showing why circular innovation succeeds when environmental performance is treated as a core product requirement rather than an additional claim made at the end.

02

Reinventing the Supply Chain

A lower-impact product depends on a network of suppliers, researchers and manufacturers that can solve problems together. This keynote examines how companies can map material consequences, build partnerships across organisational boundaries and use constraints to drive innovation, while remaining candid about the compromises and time required for systemic change.

03

Purpose as an Operating Model

Purpose has little strategic value when it is separated from investment, sourcing and product decisions. Drawing on ECOALF's development, Goyeneche considers how a clear environmental premise can guide priorities, shape culture and create consistency, while still being tested against the practical demands of quality, price and business continuity.

04

Upcycling the Oceans: Collaboration at System Scale

Marine litter cannot be addressed by a single brand or a single technical intervention. Using Upcycling the Oceans, this session explores how fishing communities, researchers, public bodies and businesses can contribute different capabilities to a shared problem, and what leaders can learn about governance, incentives and persistence in multi-party initiatives.

Javier Goyeneche is the founder and president of ECOALF, the fashion company he established in 2009 to develop products from recycled and lower-impact materials. The business emerged from a practical question: whether discarded resources could be converted into materials with the quality, design and performance required by a consumer brand. Its early years involved research and development across textiles, manufacturing and supply partners before ECOALF opened its first store.

Goyeneche had already built entrepreneurial experience in fashion through Fun & Basics, which he founded in the 1990s. With ECOALF, he shifted the centre of the business model from product category to material system. In 2015, the ECOALF Foundation launched Upcycling the Oceans, working with fishing communities and other partners to recover marine litter and build a wider process around collection, sorting, research and public awareness.

His perspective is distinctive because sustainability is addressed through the physical detail of a value chain. He focuses on where materials come from, what performance they must achieve, which partners are required and how design choices affect both impact and commercial viability. This makes circularity an operating discipline rather than a campaign added after the product has been created.

For leaders, the relevance extends beyond fashion. Regulatory pressure, resource constraints and changing customer expectations are forcing companies to understand the consequences embedded in sourcing and design. Goyeneche's experience shows why credible transition depends on patient innovation, collaboration across organisational boundaries and a willingness to redesign the business around measurable material realities.
