Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. In 1989, while a fellow at CERN, he proposed a global hypertext system to let researchers share information across incompatible computers; within two years he had written the first web server and browser and defined the three foundations the web still runs on — HTML, HTTP, and the URL. In a decision that shaped the modern internet, he gave those specifications away freely and never sought to patent or commercialize his invention, ensuring the web would belong to everyone.
A physicist by training from the University of Oxford, Berners-Lee founded the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) at MIT in 1994 and continues to direct it, guiding the open standards that keep the web interoperable. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004 and received the inaugural Millennium Technology Prize. Today, as co-founder and CTO of Inrupt and its open-source Solid platform, he is working to decentralize the web and return control of personal data to individuals — and in 2025 he published his memoir, This Is For Everyone: The Unfinished Story of the World Wide Web.
