Erik Brynjolfsson is one of the world’s leading experts on the economics of technology and artificial intelligence. He is Director of the Stanford Digital Economy Lab and the Jerry Yang and Akiko Yamazaki Professor and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI.
His research focuses on how digital technologies reshape productivity, labour markets and business performance. Long before the current AI wave, Brynjolfsson showed that technology investments create sustained value only when they are accompanied by complementary investments in skills, workflows, organisational capital and new ways of working.
For executive audiences, his work offers a rigorous bridge between AI ambition and economic outcomes. He helps leaders understand why adoption can rise faster than productivity, where the gains from generative and agentic AI are beginning to appear, and what organisations must redesign if those gains are to scale.
Brynjolfsson has authored nine books, including The Second Machine Age and Machine, Platform, Crowd, and more than 100 academic articles. He is also the Ralph Landau Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, Professor by Courtesy at Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Department of Economics, and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
