What Jonathan brings

Jonathan Ward brings a clearly argued perspective on US–China competition and the role of economic power in national security. His contribution connects Chinese long-term strategy with the decisions facing companies, financial institutions and allied governments. For boards and international leadership teams, the useful discussion concerns the strategic consequences of dependencies that may once have been treated as ordinary commercial choices. His position is deliberately distinct from a neutral forecast: it makes a case for strengthening US and allied economic capabilities. That gives an audience a defined argument to examine, challenge and compare with other interpretations of the geopolitical and commercial landscape.

Keynote topics

China’s Vision of Victory

What changes when China exposure is examined through the government’s long-term strategic objectives rather than a market-growth narrative alone? Drawing on his research and book, Ward sets out his interpretation of Chinese ambitions and the instruments used to pursue them. For boards and international businesses, this creates a focused discussion about dependency, leverage and strategic intent. The value lies in examining a clearly articulated position, not in presenting contested geopolitical judgements as settled facts.

The Decisive Decade: Economic Power and Security

Ward connects national strategy with the foundations of economic strength: industrial capacity, technological capability, finance and relationships among allies. Drawing on The Decisive Decade, he argues for a more deliberate approach to competition with China. For senior leaders, the discussion asks how investment and corporate decisions interact with security objectives—and what becomes visible when commercial resilience is considered over a longer horizon than the next reporting cycle.

Corporate Strategy in US–China Competition

International companies can find themselves between commercial incentives and changing security priorities. Ward examines that tension through his work with businesses and financial institutions. The discussion concerns how China-related exposure, investment and operating choices fit within a broader geopolitical strategy. For board and strategy audiences, it opens questions about assumptions, concentration and alternative pathways, while distinguishing a strategic argument from a promise that any organisation can eliminate geopolitical uncertainty.

The Indo-Pacific Through a Strategic Lens

China–India relations and the wider Indo-Pacific involve overlapping economic interests, security concerns and historical relationships. Drawing on his regional research, Ward considers how those dynamics shape the choices available to governments and businesses. For international leadership teams, the discussion asks where a country-by-country commercial model misses the connections between strategic actors. It is particularly useful when assessing regional dependencies and comparing different interpretations of the balance between competition, partnership and security.

Jonathan Ward is the founder of Atlas Organization, a strategy consultancy focused on China, India and geopolitical competition. His work examines Chinese national strategy, US–China relations and the place of companies and financial institutions in economic security. He approaches these questions through historical research, language study and experience advising business and government audiences.

Ward received his doctorate in China–India relations and a master’s in global and imperial history from the University of Oxford. His undergraduate studies at Columbia University included Russian and Chinese language; he holds a bachelor’s degree in Russian language and literature. His doctoral research used Chinese-language archives, giving his subsequent work a foundation in primary historical material.

He has lived and travelled extensively across China, India, Russia, Latin America and the Middle East. That experience sits alongside his research on the strategic interests of major powers and the Indo-Pacific. He is also a graduate of the Oxford–Chicago Valuation Programme, connecting his geopolitical background with corporate finance and valuation.

His book China’s Vision of Victory sets out his interpretation of the Chinese government’s global ambitions. The Decisive Decade: American Grand Strategy for Triumph Over China develops his argument for rebuilding US and allied economic power, with particular attention to industry, finance and corporate strategy. He has advised the US Department of Defense on Chinese long-term strategy and briefed government, military and business audiences. His earlier institutional roles include a senior fellowship at Hudson Institute, which now lists him as a former senior fellow.

For executive audiences, Ward offers a defined strategic position rather than an all-purpose account of geopolitics. His relevance is strongest where a brief concerns China exposure, industrial capability, economic security or the responsibilities of international business in a period of strategic rivalry. A useful conversation makes the assumptions behind that position visible and considers their implications for the organisation’s own choices.
